This week I've been talking about decimals with my kiddos. On Thursday we did an activity of writing, ordering, reading, and rounding decimals.
I gave each student a post-it note to use. Here are the directions we used:
1) Write a 4 digit number that has a decimal somewhere but at the end. Students could not repeat numbers.
2) Everyone goes to the front of the room and puts themselves in order from least to greatest.
3) I went through and had each student read their decimal and checked for the correct order.
4) Students sat down and rounded to the nearest whole number. Those were also checked to see who was understanding rounding and who still needed help.
5) Write a 5 digit number that is completely different from your first one. Include a decimal somewhere in the number but in a different place than your first number. No decimals at the end.
6) Everyone goes to the front of the room and puts themselves in order from least to greatest.
7) I went through and had each student read their decimal and checked for the correct order.
8) Students sat down and rounded to the tenths place. Some students didn't have a hundredths place so I asked them to add a number to the end. Again I did a quick check to see who was understanding and who wasn't.
Here's one of my classes during the activity.
